a) Webpages

Webpage Module

We designed our site so that people who are comfortable with Microsoft Word can easily update website pages. You can manage everything from fonts to layout of text and tables. Users can also easily add pictures, embed videos or maps, and make unique headers. This module will give an overivew of how webpages are created, edited and how more advanced users can customize their webpages.

How do I build my website?

Webpages are the core component of your website. With Townlife you can create your pages in a few minutes. Click on the CREATE button in the Administration Menu. This will open your webpage editor (see below). (make the picture into a video overview).

How do I add and format content?

As mentioned earlier those comfortable with Microsoft Word can easily update website pages. In the PAGE EDITOR there is an area in which you can type your basic website script (Content). You can also customize the fonts or add tables and pictures by using the functions in the EDITING TOOLBAR.

  • Always remember to PUBLISH your webpage when you are finished editing it. If you navigate away from your webpage your information will not be saved.

How do I create multiple webpages?

Most sites, like this one, have multiple pages. The important thing to remember when building your website is to make sure the webpages are organized and easy to navigate. When creating a new page you will see an area called PAGE INFORMATION. This is where you give your page a title and organize the flow of the web pages. For example if you are creating a page for new books:
Main-page

  1. Create a new page by clicking on CREATE.
  2. Give a name to the page in the Page Name box (i.e. New books).
  3. As this is the main page, leave the Parent box blank.
  4. Show in Navigation should be YES.
  5. Add your content to the page.
  6. Click Publish.

Now let's say we want to create sub pages for new books that are for children, youth and adult:

  1. Create a new page by clicking on CREATE.
  2. Give a name to the page in the Page Name box (i.e. Children's books).
  3. As this is the subpage choose NEW BOOKS in the Parent box .
  4. Show in Navigation should be YES.
  5. Add your content to the page.
  6. Click Publish.
  7. Repeat steps for youth and adult using different page names.

Subpage

When you view your webpage you will see the following. Tne NEW BOOKS is the main page and the other three (Adult, Children and Youth) appear as subpages. Navigating to the subpages is done by simply clicking on the subpage name.

How do I add headers or banners to my site?

All webpages have a header that identifies the "product" or "service" that you offer. Some confusion arises over whether you should post it as a banner or a header. So let's ask the simple question: What is a banner and a header?

  • A banner is usually some sort of advertising or important information that you want to appear above the header (i.e. advertising from local businesses). Below is an example of a banner ad -- they are generally smaller in size than a header and appear above the header (see below banner ad for teaching in Nunavut). Banners should be rotated frequently as they are mainly used for advertising purposes. In the Townlife Community Pigeon Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce has taken advantage of this feature and has created guidelines for businesses wanting to purchase a banner ad on their Townlife website (http://www.pigeonlakechamber.ca/document/show/1935).

  Banner

  • A header is placed on the top of the page as well but identifies what the website is about. For example the Northern Lights Library System has the following header that appears at the top of every page in their website.

Header

  1. Click on the SETTINGS button in the Administration Menu.
  2. Click on the Look & Feel option.
  3. Select the HEADER or BANNER tab.
  4. A site editor window will where you can upload the file with the header. You can also add text or format content as mentioned in the How do I add and format content?. ** The maximum width for a header is 960 pixels and for a banner is 550 pixels**
  5. Click SAVE.

How do I create a header or banner?

Most headers and banner require the use of graphic software. If you do not have these programs you can contact Townlife Sales staff at sales@townlife.com or by phone (780) 312-2627.

Can I add a footer to my site?

You can also add a footer (information that appears at the bottom of the site). The Tofield Municipal Library has a footer that ackowledges the support from website partners (http://www.townlife.com/world/Canada/Alberta/Tofield/151). These are created the exact same way as a banner ot header -- click on the Footer Tab in the Settings menu as mentioned above.

What is a site highlight and why would I add it to my website?Site-highlight

A site highlight could be advertising or important information that you want to appear directly below the site navigation menu. For example the Townlife website (www.townlife.com) has advertising for their site highlight. Most library systems have links to their catalogues or to the NLLS system that appear on the left hand side of the webpage.

To add a site highlight:

  1. Click on the SETTINGS button in the Administration Menu.
  2. Select the SITE HIGHLIGHTS tab.
  3. A site editor window will where you can upload the file. You can also add text or format content as mentioned in the How do I add and format content?. ** The maximum width for the site highlight is 180 pixels.**
  4. You can choose to have it appear on the left or right hand side of the webpage.
  5. Click SAVE.

How can I get a different header/footer on the second (or subsequent) webpages?

You may decide that you want to create multiple headers for different sections of your website -- providing something different for every page of your website.  For example you will need a main header to identify your library site but you want to dedicate a page to the Summer Reading Program that has it's own unique header.

To make a header unique to the webpage:

  1. Select the webpage you want to edit.
  2. Select either the HEADER or FOOTER  tab.
  3. Click on the checkbox beside - Use a custom header for this and only this page?
  4. Upload the banner/header as described earlier.
  5. Click SAVE.

** This will result in a webpage that has a different header than the welcome page**

What if I want to keep the main header but add a secondary header?

Several sites choose to keep the main header in order to be consistent across webpages but customize the page by adding a secondary illustration/picture. For example the Northern Lights Library System has their main header on every page but has customized the TD Summer Reading Program webpage with the DESTINATION JUNGLE picture.

Secondary-header

To do this you simply add upload the photo in the PAGE EDITOR window as mentioned in the How do I add and format content? section.
